Our spray foam rig is computerized to ensure that the foam's temperature, pressure and most important, the ratio of the 2 parts that mix together at the gun are sprayed at a 1:1 ratio. If any of them parameters are off the machine shuts down. We can print out the complete days foam job to prove that it was applied correctly throughout the job. Problems arise when the ratio is off. Older spray foam rigs that don't utilize a computer controlled reactor can't monitor if there foam is sprayed correctly. There are 2 parts of foam that mix together at the gun. 1 is the ISO part A and the other part is Resin part B. When too much iso is mixed in, it makes the foam brittle and will shrink up and can let loose and crack over time. If too much resin is used, it will never harden and will result in a bad smell. In either case the foam would have to be removed and resprayed correctly and by the time you realize the foam was bad the company would be long gone and you would be stuck with a big mess. Just make sure whoever you use can Validate there foam to prove it was done correctly and we can! The Roof Deck you see pictured above was sprayed by us in a barndo that we built for a customer. Its 110 feet long by 40 feet wide. Now imagine that foam not done correctly and have to be removed. It would be almost impossible and VERY costly. That's why we make sure its sprayed correctly!!
There are 2 types of foam. Open Cell and Closed Cell. We only use closed cell foam. Closed cell foam is a vapor barrier, thermo barrier and water resistant. Open cell foam does none of the above. Its good for sound deadening and should not be used in cold climates on exterior walls or roof decks as it can and will cause moisture under it which leads to rot and mold. We get our foam from a reputable dealer out of Grand Rapids not some online or someone selling cheap foam, its not worth the problems it could cause.
